An opening week non-conference doubleheader rendered a pair of wins for the Washington Demon basketball teams. The Demons hosted the Sigourney Savages in the first meeting between the schools.

A quick start helped the Washington Demon girls basketball team earn a convincing win versus the Savages, 65-40. Washington scored a season-best 17 points in the opening quarter, jumping out to a seven point quarter lead. The Demons led 32-23 at halftime before outscoring the Savages, 14-5, in the third quarter to extend the lead to 46-28 lead. Washington poured in 25 points in the final quarter to Sigourney’s 12, cruising to a 65-40 victory over the Savages.

Demon sophomore Sarah Nacos came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points. Seniors Addie Pacha and Amber Salow added 10 points in the victory. Senior Brynna DeLong was named the Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds in the victory. The triumph snaps Washington’s three game losing streak, improving the Demons overall record to 2-3. The loss drops Sigourney to 2-4 on the young season.

The Demon boys basketball team jumped out to a 20-point lead before hanging on for a their first non-conference victory of the season, 75-66. Washington made five three-pointers in the first quarter, opening the game with a 26-10 lead after eight minutes of play. The margin grew by nine points in the second quarter as the Demons took a 46-27 advantage into halftime. The second half was highlighted by a series of runs by the Savages. Sigourney outscored Washington 10-1 less than three minutes into the third quarter, cutting the Demon advantage to 47-37. Washington grew the lead back to 61-48 by the end of the 3rd quarter. Sigourney scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter, slicing the margin to 61-59 with six minutes remaining. The Savages ultimately couldn’t overcome their early hole, falling 75-66 to Washington.

Sigourney senior forward Blaine Gretter scored a game high 31 points, and grabbed 11 rebounds in a losing effort. Washington senior guard Derek Anding scored a season best 29 points, recording 21 points in the first half. Sophomore Dalton Myers scored 24 points in his first varsity start, earning him the Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game. The win improves Washington to 2-2 overall, while the loss drops Sigourney to 3-3 overall.

The Washington boys basketball team returns to action tomorrow evening in Oskaloosa, battling the Indians (2-2 overall) in a non-conference tilt. The girls basketball team has the next three days off, returning to the floor Friday versus the No.6 Keokuk Chiefs (3-1 overall).
