League rivals are set to square off tonight in Washington as the Demon basketball teams open their Southeast Conference schedule. The Fairfield Trojans will make the trip to Washington for a varsity doubleheader showdown with the Demons.
The start to the conference season for the Washington girls’ basketball team (1-1 overall) comes against an opponent ranked in the latest Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Class 4A poll. The Trojans (5-1 overall) enter the week as the fifth best team, winning five of their first six games of the season. Fairfield has three players who are averaging at least 9.5 points per game. Sophomore Amber Nicole Buch leads the offensive charge with 15.2 points per game. Junior Sami Fritz has chipped in 11.7 points, while junior Kylie Kurtz has recorded 9.5 points per game.
Washington returns to the court six days removed from a 52-48 setback versus the Solon Spartans. Senior forward Addie Pacha has scored 24 points through the Demons’ first two games, and has brought down 11 total rebounds, the most on the squad.
The boys’ contest features two teams searching for their first triumph of the season. Washington (0-1 record) opened their regular season slate Tuesday, falling 68-43 to the Muscatine Muskies. Washington scored 21 of their 43 points in the final quarter, dropping their early season record to 0-1. Demon senior Derek Anding scored 12 points in Tuesday’s loss, recording eight of his points after halftime.
This marks Fairfield’s (0-3 overall; 0-1 Southeast) first road game of the season, losing home games to Oskaloosa (58-54), Mount Pleasant (63-55), and Ottumwa (57-51) by a margin of eight points or less. Freshman Austin Simpson leads the Trojan offensive attack, averaging 14.7 points through the first three games of his varsity career.
