The two time defending Southeast Conference champion Washington Demon wrestling team (11-0 overall; 1-0 Southeast) began their title defense with a statement. The Demons welcomed the Fairfield Trojans (2-1 overall; 0-1 Southeast) to Washington High School for the league opener for the schools. Washington won all but two of the 14 matches, running away with a 68-7 victory.
Washington’s scoring featured eight pins, two major decisions, and two forfeits. The Demons had five wrestlers enter the match undefeated, and all recorded wins in their conference opener. Freshman Tristan Westphal opened the dual at 160 pounds, recording a pin in 1:11 in his match with Fairfield senior Tristan Ledger.
Freshman Garrett Ikred kept his undefeated streak alive without breaking a sweat, winning by forfeit in the 106 pound match.
Junior Kyle Anderson made quick work of his newest opponent in the 132 pound weight division, pinning Trojan sophomore Zach Barnes 27 seconds into the bout.
Junior Austin Hazelet won his 138 pound match by an 11-1 major decision over Fairfield junior Charles Heisel.
Junior Trey Van Weelden concluded the night with a pin in 2:36 into his match versus Trojan freshman Carl Spalla.
The home opener was senior night for the Demon wrestling team as Michael Ellingson and Bryce Rickey were honored for their years of service to the program. Both wrestler won their matches in the home opener, Ellingson pinning Trjoan freshman James Johannas 1:30 into their grapple. Rickey won his match at 170 versus Fairfield senior Drew Stever by major decision, 15-4.
Washington’s dual record improved to 11-0. The Demons return to the mat Saturday, competing in the Mediapolis Wrestling tournament. Among the schools competing in the dual include: Columbus-Winfield-Mount-Union, Fairfield, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, West Burlington, and Wapello. First matches of the day are set to begin at 10 a.m. at Mediapolis High School.
