The Iowa Mennonite School and Mid-Prairie boys basketball teams participated in a Hall of Pride Challenge Scrimmage Friday night at Hillcrest Union in Kalona.

Iowa Mennonite got the win by a 68-62 final score. The two teams traded blows early with IMS holding a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, and following a Nick Yutzy jumper in the lane in the final second of quarter two, IMS led 33-29 going to the break.

In the third quarter action stayed tight until the end of the frame when Iowa Mennonite used an 8-1 run, spurred by pressure defense to build a seven point lead going to the fourth. Mid-Prairie made several runs in the final quarter and hit shots down the stretch to stay close but each time the Golden Hawks made a run IMS found an answer by forcing a turnover, getting a layup or knocking down free throws. IMS was led in the win by Eli Gingerich with 17 points, Nick Yutzy added 12 for IMS.

Mid-Prairie was led by Caleb Statler’s career high 26 points, Nolan Faselt had 14 and Ryan Cortum finished with 11 for the Hawks.

Both teams officially open the season on Tuesday. Iowa Mennonite will square off with Wapello as they open Southeast Iowa Super Conference play. Mid-Prairie will be at home Tuesday, opening up the River Valley Conference slate with the Tipton Tigers. AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com will carry the Mid-Prairie doubleheader Tuesday night with pregame on the air at 5:30 and tip off of the girls game at 6PM with the boys to follow.
