A season-worst offensive performance made for a short playoff run for the Washington Demon football team (7-3 overall). As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com the Demons battled the Solon Spartans (6-4 overall) in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. The game went into overtime, ending on a game-winning field by Solon senior Brandon Childs, propelling the Spartans to a 17-14 victory.
Washington’s offense totaled 180 yards of total offense in the game. Demon sophomore quarterback Ryan Reighard rushed for 116 yards and scored both of Washington’s touchdowns in the setback.
Reighard opened the scoring, a one yard touchdown run, with 1:05 remaining in the first quarter, Washington went ahead 7-0. The score held throughout the first half.
Solon opened the second half scoring, a four yard run by sophomore Kendrick Harris, tying the game at 7-7 with 9:25 remaining third quarter.
Washington quickly answered the Spartan touchdown, scoring on a 58-yard Reighard touchdown run, helping the Demons regain the lead at 14-7 with 7:43 left in the third.
The score held until the final 90 seconds of the game. Childs hooked up with Harris on a 39-yard touchdown reception, evening the game at 14-14 with 1:26 remaining in the game. The ensuing possession saw the Demons lose possession of the football, but they also lost Reighard to injury. The Spartans kneeled on the football, sending the game into overtime.
Sophomore Javionn Willis, who hasn’t thrown a pass all season, took over as the Demons’ quarterback during the first overtime drive. His first varsity pass went into the hand of a Spartan in the endzone. The ensuing offensive possession saw the Spartans move the ball inside the five yard line but the Demon defense forced fourth down. The Spartans, who hadn’t attempted a field goal all season, sent Childs in to kick a 15 yard field goal. The senior, who was 14-16 on extra point attempts during the regular season, knocking the game winning field goal through the east end zone uprights, propelling Solon in the second round.
Washington’s season ends with an overall record of 7-3.
