Cedarcrest Golf Course in Columbus Junction is playing host to Thursday night’s Class 2A boys and girls state qualifying cross country meet.
The KCII listening area has two teams participating at the site in the Columbus Wildcats and Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. The Columbus Wildcats placed seventh at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet on their home course with a score of 160 points. They were paced by Josh Keller who finished as conference runner up with his time of 16:59. Other Wildcat finishers included Diego Sanchez in 35th, Marc Estrada 40th, J.D. Lekwa 44th, Armando Quiroz 51st, Tucker Morrison 61st and Erick Cantarero 65th.
Last time the No. 4 ranked Mid-Prairie boys were in action they finished as conference runners up in the River Valley Conference meet at Monticello. The Golden Hawks posted a team score of 66 points, falling to No. 1 ranked Monticello by 28 points. Top Golden Hawk finisher in that event was Peyton Miller, taking seventh with a time of 17:41. Other Mid-Prairie finishers included Luke Sigler 11th, Floyd Evans 19th, Andrew Schwartz 21st, Brent Foster 27th and Marshal Teets 29th.
In total the boys field boasts four ranked teams in the 14 team field, led by the No. 4 ranked Golden Hawks. Also participating will be No. 8 Williamsburg, No. 14 Northeast Goose Lake and No. 16 Davis County. Other teams in the field include Albia, Centerville, Central Lee, Danville, Louisa-Muscatine, Mediapolis, Burlington Notre Dame, Prairie City Monroe, and West Liberty.
Individually the boys field has six ranked runners. The top ranked individual is Zach Hougland of Davis County at No. 7 in the latest poll. Columbus’ Josh Keller checks in at No. 16 in the latest set of rankings, followed by a pair of Golden Hawks with Mid-Prairie’s Peyton Miller at No. 18 and Ryan Errthum at #25. Mediapolis’ Garrett Hinson stands at #21 in class 2A while another Davis County Mustang, Doug Turner is #28.
On the girls side of the event Columbus and Mid-Prairie will both also represent the KCII listening area. At the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet the Columbus Wildcats did not have enough girls runners to post a team score. They were led individually at the competition by Ashley Canny in 18th with a time of 23:10. Other Wildcat finishers at the event included Jenessa Carpenter 34th, Grace Chapman 37th and Andrea Rodriguez 44th. In No. 10 Mid-Prairie’s most recent action they placed third with a score of 115 points. The top Golden Hawk girls finisher was Anna Hostetler in 15th with a time of 20:57. Other Mid-Prairie finishers included Maddi Zahradnek 21st, Hannah Van Roekel 22nd, Greta Schmidt 23rd, Kessa Jones 34th, Kate Cavanagh 52nd and Sophia Norman 61st.
The girls field has two ranked teams, led by No. 10 Mid-Prairie. Also participating is No. 16 Mediapolis. Other teams in field include Albia, Centerville, Central Lee, Danville, Davis County, Louisa-Muscatine, Northeast, Goose Lake, Burlington Notre Dame, Prairie City Monroe, West Liberty and Williamsburg.
The girls field has six total ranked runners, led by No. 4 Julie Hollensbe from Williamsburg. Albia’s Jordan Winke checks in at No. 8, Williamsburg’s second ranked runner on the squad is Kiaya Walters at No. 15, followed by a pair of Mid-Prairie runners with Anna Hostetler at No. 18 and Maddi Zahradnek at No. 19. Maddie Kaczinski of Northeast Goose Lake is at No.21. Action for the class 2A state qualifying meet begins this evening at 4PM at Cedarcrest Country Club.
