What a difference a year has made for Washington Demon (7-1 overall; 5-0 Class 3A District 5) sophomore football players Ryan Reighard and Javionn Willis. As freshmen last season, Willis played the role of Washington’s quarterback of the future while Reighard lined up in the backfield as a running back. On Friday, Reighard completed 10 passes to Willis for 155 yards and scored three touchdowns, helping Washington to a 42-24 triumph over Mount Pleasant.
All three touchdown receptions were longer than 10 yards. The two opened the game’s scoring on a 30-yard touchdown reception less than three minutes into the game. Reighard and Willis opened up the second half scoring with a 42-yard touchdown strike. Their final scoring reception was the shortest, connecting from 11-yards out to end the scoring for Washington in the middle of the fourth quarter.
The week eight performance helped Willis move into the top spot in Class 3A District 5 in two receiving categories. Willis has caught a district-leading 41 passes, collecting a group best 644 yards. His eight receiving touchdowns are tied for the most in the district with Davenport Assumption’s Will Ontiveros.
Willis also had a notable game defensively for the Demons. He recorded 2.5 total tackles and forced an interception, Washington’s lone forced turnover of the game.
The victory is the seventh in a row for Washington, wrapping up a top two finish in the district and the right to host a first round playoff game. The Demons can win the district championship this Thursday versus the Davenport Assumption Knights (6-2 overall; 5-0 Class 3A District 5). Washington won last year’s matchup, 45-27, at Case Field.
