Barring any unfortunate circumstances, a rushing record on the Columbus Wildcats (2-5 overall; 1-4 Class 1A District 6) football history books will be rewritten this week in Sigourney. Senior Mauricio Ramirez reached the 1,000 yard plateau for a third straight season last week during the Wildcats 56-18 loss to the Pella Christian Eagles. His 108 yards versus the Eagles ballooned Ramirez’s 2015 rushing yards to 1,019, and his varsity career mark is at 3752.

Columbus head football coach Jeff Martin said on Saturday’s JET Physical Therapy Radio Coach Corner that Ramirez is just 27 yards short of breaking the school’s career rushing yard.

The district meeting with Sigourney-Keota (4-3 overall; 3-2 Class 1A District 6) pits the two best running backs in Class 1A District 6 against one another. Sigourney senior Peyton Crawford leads the district with 1220 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Ramirez’s season numbers are second best in the grouping.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sigourney High School.
