Pumpkins at the 2014 Festival of the Pumpkins at the Washington Public Library. Photos by Sally Y. Hart
The Festival of the Pumpkins begins tomorrow at the Washington Public Library. Last year some of the pumpkins were transformed into Fancy Nancy, Harry Potter, and Fidgety Fish. Jo Weidner, librarian, explains people are welcome to bring in decorated pumpkins; they can be painted, stacked together or even wrapped in something crocheted, but they ask that none of the pumpkins are carved. Also, the pumpkins don’t have to be book characters. Last year 48 pumpkins were submitted.
There is an adult and children’s division, with the winning child being named the grand marshal of Washington’s annual trick-or-treat around the square. Patrons are welcome to start dropping off pumpkins at the library Saturday.
