In a matchup of KCII area teams Friday night in Sigourney, it was the #8 Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks who scored a non-district win 49-26 over the Savage Cobras.

In a game heard on AM and FM KCII, neither defense had a consistent answer for the opposing offense. Sigourney-Keota drove down the field with their first possession and finished a nine play 63 yard drive with a Jacob Wickenkamp 17 yard sweep to take a 6-0 lead following a missed two point try. The Golden Hawks would answer through the air as Ryan Cortum dialed up Ricky Vargas for 56 yards and a touchdown to give Mid-Prairie the lead at 7-6 following the extra point. The Hawks scored 28 in the second quarter alone. Mid-Prairie stretched their lead to 13-6 when Cortum went to the air again, finding Blake Schwartz on a fade pattern from 22 yards out for a score.

After a Golden Hawk defensive stop Mid-Prairie put together a four play 48 yard drive that ended when Ricky Vargas found the end zone on a two yard run to make it 21-6. On the next Golden Hawk possession Cortum went up top again, this time connecting with Levi Duwa for the second longest pass play in Mid-Prairie history, an 85 yard bomb that put the Hawks up 28-6. SK answered right back on the very next play with a bomb of their own as Luke Greiner threw a beautiful ball to Peyton Crawford, who had drifted behind the Golden Hawk defense, and raced 60 yards for the score to bring the Cobras within 28-12. Mid-Prairie went to the two minute drill in the waning moments of the first half and Cortum found Levi Duwa for his second touchdown catch, Cortum’s fourth throwing score of the half, this one a one yard completion, leaving the score 35-12 at the break.

With their first possession of the second half Mid-Prairie went 38 yards on six plays to the end zone, capped by a Nolan Faselt 12 yard touchdown run making the score 42-12. Ricky Vargas was next to find the end zone for Mid-Prairie, his second two yard touchdown run of the night to enact the continuous clock with the score 49-12 Mid-Prairie going to the fourth quarter. In the final period both teams began to rotate reserves into the contest. Sigourney-Keota scored twice in the final quarter, Jacob Wickenkamp on his second scoring run of the night, a one yard plunge and Avery Moore a three yard sweep to reach the final score.

The two teams combined for 41 first downs and 930 yards of total offense in the game. Mid-Prairie outgained Sigourney-Keota 505-425, including 279-172 through the air. The Cobras had the better of the ground attacks putting up 253 yards to Mid-Prairie’s 226. Mid-Prairie was seven of nine on third down in the game and four of five on red zone scoring chances. Individually, the Golden Hawks were led by Cortum’s nine for 11 night for 279 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite targets were Levi Duwa with three catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Schwartz had four grabs for 108 yards and a score. On the ground Ricky Vargas had 120 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns.
