The homecoming football game for the Columbus Wildcats (2-1 overall; 1-0 Class 1A District 6) was cut short on Friday evening due to inclement weather in Southeast Iowa. Battling multiple lightning delays, the Wildcats and the Wapello Indians (1-2 overall) were able to play six minutes and 21 seconds of the first quarter before the weather postponed the game.

Head coach Jeff Martin told KCII Sports on this Saturday’s JET Physical Therapy Radio Coaches Corner, the two teams decided to finish the game tonight rather than playing the final three and a half quarters on Saturday afternoon. He adds this will change up his practice schedule this week. “I am already thinking about having a lighter practice on Tuesday and having a heavier practice on Wednesday.” Martin said, “We may have to go longer on Thursday to get some stuff taken care of but we will adjust and the kids are resilient.”

The game will resume at 6 p.m. tonight at Columbus High School.
