For a third straight season, the Washington Demon football team opened up the first practice with new faces competing for the team’s place kicking position.
Last season, Jacob Baughman was tapped as the one in charge of replacing Mason Quigley in kicking off, and kicking extra points and field goals. He finished the year 52-55 on extra point attempts and 8-10 on field goal tries, setting the record for the most field goals made in a season by a Demon kicker.
When practice opened Monday afternoon, junior Kyle Anderson and sophomore Tony Torres were going through kick off drills together. The pair, along with Baughman, played for the Demons soccer team this past spring. Torres finished third on the team with four goals scored, while Anderson recorded a single goal.
Head football coach Garrison Carter says a unique thing about the Demons’ football program is their kickers are bought into kicking the football only. “They spend all practice kicking,” Carter said, “I think there is benefit to that. We did the same thing with Jacob Baughman last year and Mason Quigley the year before. We have been fortunate in Washington to turn out some good kickers and hopefully these two are next in line.”
The Demons are also looking to replace their punter from last year. Daryn Sebelius punted the ball 31 times last season, averaging nearly 33 years per kick.
Washington will put full pads on for the first time Saturday morning as they prepare for their season opener on Friday, August 28, in Pella against the defending Class 3A champions the Little Dutch.
