A pair of stellar pitching performances helped the Washington Demon softball team (4-21 overall) double their win total for the season. The Demons took part in a varsity softball tournament hosted by the Muscatine Muskies on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

After suffering losses to Louisa-Muscatine, 10-4, and Durant-Bennett, 10-2 ,on Friday, the Demons responded Saturday with a 12-0 victory in four innings over Davenport Central and finished the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Muskies.

Against Davenport Central, the Demons scored their dozen runs on eight hits, while the Blue Devils walked six batters in the game. Sophomore Jessie Buchholz collected two hits, including a double, driving in three runs and scoring two more in the victory. Eighth grader Haylee Wilson pitched a complete game shutout, allowing one hit and striking out a batter in the victory.

The Demons overcame a 1-0 deficit to the Muskies in game two, rallying with two runs in the fourth inning and adding another in the seventh inning for a 3-1 victory. Sophomore Taylor Dicks went the distance on the mound, allowing a single run on four hits, walking one and striking out another.

The pair of victories improves Washington’s overall record to 4-21. The Demons return to the field today, hosting the Keokuk Chiefs (16-9 overall) in a Southeast Conference doubleheader at Washington’s softball complex.
