The Washington Demon girls’ golf team celebrates their Class 4A state championship at the Washington Golf and Country Club on June 1.

The outgoing superintendent of Washington Community Schools has plans to take his recent state championship golf team to dinner. The Washington girls’ golf team captured the program’s third title on June 2nd, the first state title won under Dr. Mike Jorgensen.

Jorgensen, who is in his final month as the chief administrator of the Washington Community School District, said the idea of taking the champs out to dinner started when he was coaching at another school district. “Back in 1988, I had the pleasure of being a part of a boys’ state basketball championship when I was at Perry.” Jorgensen said, “The superintendent at the time to all the members of the team and the coaching staff out for a nice dinner on his dime.”

Jorgensen liked the gesture so much, he decided to inherit the tradition and take any team who won the state championship while he is superintendent to dinner. The invitation to head coach Leonard Kull and the girls was dinner at any restaurant of their choice. The team has decided to celebrate the championship with Dr. Jorgensen at Mi Pueblo Real in Washington.
