An ordinance is being drafted that would allow Kalona residents to obtain a second water meter. City staff could have the ordinance ready for the city council to consider in July.
City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the ordinance would permit homeowners to have a second meter installed for irrigation systems and watering. He explains they would only be charged for the water they used. Currently, homeowners that water gardens or yards, or have an irrigation system, also pay the sanitary sewer fee. Schlabaugh adds besides the installation of the meter, some piping work would need to be done inside the home.
