More 11th grade students across Iowa said yes, they had used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days. The same group of students only had nine percent who said they had smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, on the Iowa Youth Survey. Sarah Smith, prevention specialist with Prelude Behavioral Services, said this concerns her as it is another way for people to become addicted to tobacco use. Also, e-cigarettes are not regulated.
The same survey results show that 22 percent of 11th grade students in Iowa had ever used marijuana.
Every two years the Iowa Youth Survey is taken by sixth, eighth, and eleventh grade students anonymously answering questions about a variety of topics from drinking and smoking to bullying and diet.
