The girls’ golf champions of the Southeast Conference are battling for an extra week of competition this morning in Cedar Rapids. The Washington Demon girls’ golf team is scheduled to compete in the Class 4A regional tournament in Cedar Rapids against 11 other programs across eastern Iowa.

The teams in Demons’ regional field include Cedar Rapids Xavier, Central DeWitt, Clear Creek-Amana,  Davenport Assumption, Davenport North, Fairfield, Keokuk, Maquoketa, Mount Pleasant, North Scott, and Oskaloosa.

The Demons enter regional play with the lowest 18-hole score in the state, averaging 340 strokes as a unit. Mount Pleasant posts the next best average in the field, shooting a 360 as a collection.

Washington freshman Sarah Nacos posts the best 18-hole average in the entire state, regardless of class, shooting a median score of 73.3. Teammate Denna Peiffer is right behind Nacos in Class 4A in 18-hole average, shooting an 80 average during full rounds this season.

To qualify for the state tournament, the Demons need to finish among the top two teams or a golfer needs to finish in the top four individually.

The Class 4A regional tournament tees off this morning at 10 a.m. from the St. Andrew’s Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. Listen to tomorrow’s KCII sports page for results from the tournament.
