One Washington senior is advancing her high school athletic career at the top meet in the state after her performance Thursday evening in Mount Pleasant. The Washington Demon girls’ track team competed in the Class 3A Region 6 track meet at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex, and senior sprinter Macy Marek claimed the region champion in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Marek’s 100 meter dash time was clocked at 12.98 seconds and she posted a 200 meter dash time of 26.88 seconds. Marek says her performance tops off her high school athletic career, “Our district was really hard, with a lot of fast teams.” Marek said, “I had never actually placed first at (regionals) in an event, I have gotten second but not first, so that was cool.”

Washington girls’ track coach Stefanie Tschantz has high hopes for Marek at next week’s state track meet, “I think for her to be a senior and to come out at (regionals) champ, she is going to have a lot of confidence going into the state meet.” Tschantz said, “She’s got everything going for her, her confidence is high and it should be.”

The Washington girls’ track team learned this afternoon their sprint medley relay team has qualified for the state meet based on their time. The squad of Marek, Kenzie Marek, Amber Salow, and Morgan Kimball clocked a time of 1:53.31, the 13th best time among the 24 team field.

The teams with the eight best times in each event who don’t automatically qualify for state are welcomed to compete in the Iowa’s top meet.

The Iowa Girls’ and Boys’ State Track Meet 2015 begins Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
