This year’s Washington Demon senior soccer players will be honored during today’s Southeast Conference doubleheader against the Fort Madison Bloodhounds. The Demon boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will each recognize the contributions of four seniors over their high school careers.

The quartet of senior on Washington’s girls’ soccer team leads the squad in each major statistical category. Goalkeeper Stephanie Evans has made over 150 saves so far this spring, most in the Southeast Conference and ranks among the top 10 in the state. Forward Kayla Schindler has produced a team-leading four goals, while forward Lauren Swan has assisted on a team best three goals. Trevje Karugo, a starting defender, rounds out the seniors for Washington’s girls’ soccer team.

The boys’ senior foursome also has made key contributions on the field this season. Joe Smith has been a main offensive threat for the Demons, tied with scoring a team-high five goals and assisting on two others. Smith and junior Christian Mejia are tied for the most assists. Jacob Baughman has split his time between the midfield and goal keeper positions, recording 44 stops and posting a save percentage of 78 percent. Khaven Wagenknecht made his spring debut last Thursday in Keokuk, and contributed his first goal of the season two minutes in the match. Wagenknecht has scored a goal in each game he has played this spring. Sebastian De la Rosa Lopez is among the Demons’ starting defense.

The Demons split the first set of games versus the Bloodhounds in Fort Madison. The girls’ game went in favor of Washington 2-1, while Fort Madison claimed the boys’ match 6-1.

Today’s Southeast Conference soccer double header kicks off with the girls’ game at 4 p.m. from Washington High School.

On Saturday, the boys’ team went 1-1 at a tournament held in Mid-Prairie. The Demons fell to Fairfield 6-1, with Wagenknecht and Andres Gutierrez scoring. In the consolation match, Washington won over Cedar Valley Christian 4-1. The four Demons who recorded goals were Wagenknecht, Gutierrez, Baughman, and Smith.
