Slugging his way onto the Division III baseball scene this spring, Washington alumni Walker Breard has been recognized as one of the best players in the Midwest Conference. Breard was one of five Cornell College Ram’s baseball players to be named to the All-Midwest Conference’s South Division 1st team, the most elected in program history.
The 2014 graduate of Washington High School led the Midwest Conference in slugging percentage (.734) and home runs (7). Breard also raked in a team-high 30 runs batted in (R.B.I) during his first college season.
Breard won numerous regional and national awards last month for a superb three game stretch against Illinois College. Breard totaled three doubles, four home runs, seven runs and 10 RBIs while reaching base 11 times in 14 plate appearances on April 9th and 10th against the Blueboys. His performance earned him NCAA Division III Hitter of the Week honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was selected to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week and also was the Midwest Conference Hitter of the Week.
The Rams ended their season on Saturday in the championship game of the Midwest Conference tournament. After losing their first tournament game to the Ripon Red Hawks 2-1 Friday morning, the Rams rattled off three straight wins in a 24 hour span to advance to the Midwest Conference championship game again against the Ripon Red Hawks. The Red Hawks took the championship game 8-0. Breard provided the Rams with offensive power in the run to the championship game, smashing three home runs and collecting five RBI’s in the Ram’s three game winning streak. The Rams season ends with a 16-21 overall record.
