An early season cold spell has cancelled another local track meet. The Columbus Relays, scheduled for this afternoon in Columbus Junction, was called off on Wednesday afternoon by the school district.

Columbus athletic director Jake McCullough says cold weather moving through the region was the determining factor in cancelling the meet. “As of now we do not have any days to make up the event, but is always something we are looking at.”

KCII’s Accuweather forecast for Columbus Junction calls for a high of 40 degrees with wind gusts out of the north-north west as high as 15 miles per hour. At night, the temperature is expected to drop below freezing at 23 degrees, with winds out of the east at nine miles per hour.

Among the KCII area schools who were set to compete the event include: the Washington Demons, the Columbus Wildcats, the Highland Huskies, and the Lone Tree Lions.

Demon girls’ track coach Stefainie Tschantz says they are planning on using the day as an extra practice for the athletes, but doesn’t plan on replacing the lost event with another meet. “They (Columbus) aren’t rescheduling the meet (at this time) and our schedule is pretty full with two meets a week through the end of the season.” Tschantz said, “So I don’t think we will have time to make this meet up.”

The two track meets a week begin next week for the Washington girls’ track team. On Tuesday the Demons travel to participate in the Falcon Relays at West Burlington High School and will compete in the Mediapolis Relays on Thursday.
