Despite recording just their second losing season since 2007, the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team had bright spots under first year under head coach Jay Zieglowsky. The Demons ended the year with a record of 6-16, finishing their season last Wednesday in a 52-34 loss to the Knoxville Panthers in the Class 4A Region 5 tournament.

Four Demon players finished the year scoring over 100 points, led by junior guard Amber Salow’s 177 points. Salow led Washington with 33 made three pointers this season. Junior guard Morgan Kimball was second on the team in total points with 111, and made a team leading 45 free throws this season.

Junior forward Addie Pacha concluded her season as the only Demon player with 100+ points and rebounds this season. Pacha scored 110 total points, tying her with senior Dylann Schluetter for third on the team in scoring. She also brought down 101 rebounds, tiying her with senior Sydney Hoffman for the team lead in rebounds. Hoffman finished nine points shy of 100 for the season.

Freshman guard Sarah Nacos finished the year with 94 total points in 14 games this season. Nacos was added to the varsity roster during Washington’s 51-45 victory against Burlington on Jan. 3rd and stayed there the rest of the season.

A factor in this year’s struggling season was the amount of mental errors committed by the Demons. Washington turned the ball over 425 times, three less than Fort Madison for the most turnovers in the Southeast Conference.

Washington loses fsix seniors off this year’s squad including Schluetter, Hoffman, Addison Gaal, MaKenna Goodwin, and Macy Marek. The girls’ basketball team banquet will be held this Sunday evening inside the commons at Washington High School.
