Six Washington Demon wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete for a spot in the state tournament this weekend in Fairfield. As a team, the Demons finished in second place out of the six team Class 2A-Sectional 8 tournament at Mediapolis High School. The Bulldogs won the team tournament with 250 points, the Demons finished in second place with 203 total points.

The top two wrestlers from the Sectional 8 tournament will square off this weekend against the top two wrestlers from Class 2A-Sectional 7 tournament held this past weekend at Centerville High School. Each Demon wrestler who finished in second place in their respective weight class, will face the winner of the Sectional 7 tournament in their initial matchup this weekend.

Sophomore Alex Latcham (25-9 overall) will represent Washington at next week’s district tournament in the 106 pound weight class. He is slated to face Chariton freshman Gabe Ruepke (19-3) in his first district bout.

Joining Latcham in Fairfield will be sophomore Andrew Waite (28-6 overall) representing the Demons in the 113 pound weight class. Waite is scheduled to face Chariton freshman Dylin Harberts (29-6 overall) in his first district match.

Sophomore Kyle Anderson (27-5 overall) has advanced to the district tournament in the 120 pound weight class. He is set to face Albia freshman Zachary Oldham (37-8 overall) in the first district match.

Another sophomore, Austin Hazelett (31-7 overall) has qualified for the district tournament in the 126 pound weight class. Hazelett has been paired up with Prairie City-Monroe senior Tristan Clark (39-2 overall) in his first district match.

Sophomore Trey Van Weelden (28-6 overall) is on to the district tournament in the 138 pound weight class. He will face Albia sophomore Kyle Sinnott (28-14 overall) in his first district matchup.

Finally, senior Brad Skubal (37-1 overall) has moved on to the district tournament in the 195 pound weight division. He is scheduled to face Knoxville junior Travis Poffenbarger (31-11 overall) in his first match.

The district tournament will begin at noon at Fairfield High School with the top two finishers in each weight class advancing to the state tournament next Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
