In a close game the winless Mid-Prairie boys’ basketball team (1-12) found their first win of the season last night. Hosting West Liberty (2-11) the Golden Hawks won 46-45 in overtime.
The Golden Hawks got off to a fast start in this game and led at halftime 24-20. Mid-Prairie would lead by as much as eight points. West Liberty would make adjustments in the second half and the game went into overtime with a score of 40-40. Mid-Prairie was down by one late in overtime. Then Mid-Prairie junior Nolan Fasselt would drive to the basket and get the lay up to fall with under 11 seconds to go, giving the Golden Hawks a one point lead. West Liberty had one more opportunity to win the game, but Golden Hawk defense didn’t allow the Comets to get a shot off.
Mid-Prairie coach Chris Kern said the win is important to his team, “It means so much right now. These guys have worked so hard and have been close in a lot of close games that would end up slipping away. They showed a lot of heart, pride, and desire to come out and how they did tonight. There were numerous times when they could have thrown in the towel. I have never been more proud of a team than this team tonight.”
The Golden Hawks will take on Iowa City Regina tomorrow night at Iowa City Regina.
