Two influenza-related deaths in children have been confirmed in Iowa and a third is under investigation, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. Over 160 people have been hospitalized across the state for flu-associated cases. The flu remains widespread in Iowa. Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health states people in Washington County have both been hospitalized for the flu and are being treated at home.
IDPH still recommends getting a flu shot. Fisher says the vaccine is the best way to prevent getting the flu, even though a strain has mutated. Also, she reminds people to wash their hands frequently, cover their coughs and stay home when ill to prevent the spread of illness.
