The first year head coach of the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team (2-6 overall; 0-2 conference) wants his team to be more aggressive when they hit the basketball floor. In their first practice since their 45-23 loss to Marion, Jay Zieglowsky worked on making the girls fiercer basketball players on both sides of the floor, especially on the defensive end.
Zieglowsky says while the team isn’t giving up a lot of points, they could be doing a better job of protecting their hoop. “We are giving up 42 points per game which is really nice,” Zielowsky said, “We could be giving up mid-to-low 30’s if we would eliminate some of the mental and positional mistakes we have made defensively.”
Zielogwsky had the team run several press zone drills, focusing on getting in the offensive players face and denying a shot. The team also focused part of practice on ball handing drills to help improve on the shrink the team’s 22.2 turnovers per game average.
The Washington girls’ basketball team travels to Wayland today for a scrimmage with the WACO Warriors (6-3 overall). The Demons resume regular season play this Saturday on the road against the Burlington Greyhounds.
