Style points played a factor Thursday evening in a Southeast Conference wrestling showdown between the Washington Demons and the Keokuk Chiefs. Nine Washington wrestlers won their matches Thursday evening, six scoring more than three points in a 41-26 dual meet victory over Keokuk.
The Demons recorded four pins (worth six points), two major decisions (worth four points), and three decision (three points) on the evening. Two of the Demons four pins came from wrestlers making their initial appearance this season. Sophomore Andrew Latchum wrestling at 106 got a pin a minute and 46 seconds into his battle with freshman Hunter Christy, while freshman Tanner Murphy pinned Keokuk junior Ben Wyatt in three minutes nine seconds.
Head wrestling coach Brent Van Weelden says he was overall pleased with his team’s effort. “The toss up matches we pretty much won and where we need to get bonus points we did,” Van Weelden said, “2-0 in the conference. It hasn’t been too long ago that Keokuk dominated us so we are happy where we are at.”
Washington’s wrestlers are back on the mat this weekend in a tournament at Dikes-New Hartford.
