The West Chester City Council has decided to scrap an ordinance that would have prohibited open carrying of firearms on city property. The council voted to not move forward with Ordinance 134 at their meeting Saturday.

Councilman Bryan Tobin says they began considering a gun ban in January, following a minor altercation during their December 2013 meeting between an individual who was openly carrying a firearm and someone who was not.

After the city’s attorney directed the council not to pursue a gun ban, members of the council considered establishing zones where open carry would be prohibited. The item had been tabled since then, as West Chester is currently in between attorneys and the council wanted legal advice before proceeding with the new proposal.
