Some homeowners in Kalona are being told to boil their water for the time being. A boil advisory was issued for a portion of Kalona on Tuesday after a water main broke near BP on Highway 1.

Kalona City Clerk Karen Christner says this is impacting homes on B, C and D Avenues, as well as the mobile home park. Those living on the west side of the city in that four block radius should boil their water before ingesting to kill any bacteria or organisms that may have made it into the system. Residents can use untreated water for purposes such as bathing.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, after water samples collected 24 hours apart have tested clean for bacteria, the city will lift the advisory and notify residents.
