A late November snow storm didn’t keep the Washington Demons girls basketball team from opening up their 2014-15 season Monday evening. The Washington Demons traveled to Eddyville for a non-conference matchup with the Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets. Eddyville-Blakesburg came into the matchup as the no. 12 rated team in Class 2A.

Behind 23 points from junior point guard Morgan Kimball, Washington was able to come away with a 53-47 victory over the Rockets. Kimball, who went scoreless against the Rockets last season, made nine of 10 free throws and grabbed down five rebounds in the victory. Head coach Jay Zieglowsky says it is always nice to start out a season with a victory.

“Especially against a ranked opponent.” Zielowsky said, “They had the bulls eye on them right out of the gate but we played well enough to win.”

Senior Sydney Hoffman scored eight points, junior Amber Salow had seven points, and senior Dylan Schluetter had five points for Washington. The Demons move their record to 1-0 on the young season. They will be in action next Tuesday  in Wellman against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. You can catch all the action on AM and FM KCII and KCIIradio.com with pregame coverage to begin at 5:45 from Tim Grady Gymnasium.
