The Mid-Prairie wrestling team will start the 2014 season with a youthful group of wrestlers.

“We lost a lot from last year’s team.” head wrestling coach Justin Garvey said, “We are giving the guys a few weeks to rest from football before we get into the full swing of things.”

Garvey has five sophomores penciled into starting weight classes for the upcoming season. Duncan Cain is slated to be either the Golden Hawk’s 106 or 113 pound wrestler. Blake Murphy is penciled in as the starter for either the 126 or 132 weight class. Visouth Peterschmidt and Cameron Tolander are competing for spots in the 170 and 182 pound weight class.  Finally, Levi Duwa will start in either the 195 or 220 weight class.

The only other projected starter heading to the season is senior Josh Murphy, who will command either the 120 or 126 pound weight class. Garvey says Josh is closing in on a personal milestone.

“He is coming up on the 100 win mark, hoping to break that in the early part of the season.” Garvey said, “He has had real tough brackets in sectionals and districts, and hasn’t quite been able to crack the state tournament yet. We are really hoping this year he can make that jump.”

Practice for the Mid-Prairie wrestling team opens up on November 17th. The Golden Hawk’s first duel is scheduled for December 2nd against English Valleys, Eddyville-Blakesburg, and Wapello in English Valleys.
