A major reason why the Washington Demons evened their 2014 regular season record on Friday was the play of senior Thomas Bump.
As heard on 106.1 FM KCII and KCIIradio.com, Washington improved their record to 2-2 with a 42-12 win against district rival Fairfield at Case Field.
The Washington County Hospital and Clinic’s Player of the Game went to Bump, who was an all around weapon for the Demons.
Nearly half of Dayrn Sebelius’s 19 completions Friday night went to his senior tight end as Bump finished the game with 9 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown reception. Defensively, he collected 11 total tackles, 3 of them for loss, and also intercepted a Cameron Baumann pass in the first quarter.
Demon Head Coach Garrison Carter say Thomas is a kid who does more than just collect stats on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. “He’s our vocal leader at practice, He’s a kid who stays after practice and runs sprints, I mean he is just a grinder,” Carter said, “He’s that kid when we are down and having a slow practice, he’s the one braking and yelling and getting the team fired up.”
The Demon’s have yet another tough opponent this weekend as Washington will travel to Solon in a rematch of last year’s Class 3A semifinal game. Bump says the key to getting their first winning streak of the season is having more confidence on the field. “Work hard at everything we do and know that we are one of the best teams in the state and prove it out on the field.” Bump said, “We have so much potential and sometimes we don’t show it.”
The Demon’s are preparing to head north this weekend for a state semifinal rematch with the Solon Spartans. You can hear all the action this Friday night beginning with Washington Hy-Vee Pregame show at 7 p.m. on 106.1 FM KCII and online at KCIIradio.com.
