A building with structural problems in Winfield will be torn down after a long legal battle. For the past two years the city has worked to condemn the building at 101 South Locust Street.
According to Mayor Chris Finnell , this was made a priority because the building is a safety hazard. After analyzing the century old building, an engineer said it wasn’t a matter of if the building will fall down, it’s when.
The city has spent over $10,000 to abate the structure’s asbestos problem, and will spend $40,000 to demolish it.
Finnell says they’d like to have someone develop the lot. Other ideas include a small park and a combined library and community center. Demolition is slated for July 7th.
