A number of plants are recommended for shady areas of yards. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advise there are a variety of perennials suitable for partial to heavy shade including black snakeroot, columbine, Japenese painted fern and bleeding heart. They also suggest toad lily, hosta and crested iris. Perennials require some maintenance including watering, fertilizing, pinching and dividing.
