The anticipated lane closures on Highway 1 begin next week. The Iowa Department of Transportation project was initially set to begin in mid-April, but was delayed due to the weather. Monday, LL Pelling of North English will start resurfacing the stretch of road from Highway 22 in Kalona to Highway 218 in Iowa City.
DOT Construction Tech Supervisor Marv May says Highway 1 is also being resurfaced from the railroad overpass west of Washington to Kalona. Norse Asphalt is expected to start on that Tuesday.
The work is going to require alternating lane closures from a half hour after sunrise until a half hour before sunset Monday through Saturday. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mount Pleasant construction office, work should be completed by November, weather permitting.
The projected cost of both portions of the resurfacing is roughly $12.4 million.
