The Mid-Prairie girls golf team continued rolling Friday afternoon, blasting the competition at the Golden Hawk Invitational in Kalona. As a team Mid-Prairie took home the title with a 385 total for the 18 hole event. Iowa City Regina was a distant second at 412. Following the meet Head Coach Tracy McArtor talked about his teams performance and their play to this point in the season.

“The girls are finally putting it all together. The one thing that they did struggle with today was their putting, but tee to green, I’ve seen a lot more consistency across the team. They are getting off the tee well, they are getting themselves into position to make pars or no worst than bogies, and when they do get into trouble, they are getting themselves out of trouble right away,” McArtor said.

The Golden Hawks were led by Alyson Wertz with her medalist round of 90. Wertz bested Fairfield number one Lindsey Repp in a sudden death playoff on the first hole. Despite being in trouble by pushing her tee shot to the right, Wertz rebounded with a spectacular second shot and was able to save par while Repp got tangled up in trees on the left side of the fairway and had to settle for bogey. Following the playoff Wertz talked about the experience.

“Earlier, on the second time playing one I had a similar shot, so I just hit the same club and hit it the same way, and I ended up having a better shot that time. My putting was very good at all, all day, so I just focused, took a deep breath and made it on my second putt,” Wertz said.

Mid-Prairie will next be in action Monday when they host West Branch.
