The Washington Demon golf team lost four seniors last year, including their best player in Dillon De Perrot, but they bring back some veteran youth to this years team.
Ryan Waite is the new top guy on the team, averaging an 83 on 18 holes last year, he will be called upon to be a leader. Sophomore Derek Anding is also someone who will need to play well this year, as he averaged third lowest at 85.
Outside of those two, the Demons must go deep into their reserves from last year, and look to Blake Weidman to step up from averaging 88.5 on 18 holes.
Head coach Mark Berhow said he tries not schedule a lot of home meets, but with a young team, this could be good for the team.
“That is an advantage for us, I think with some of the inexperience we have this year in at least three of our spots; I think that will help us,” Berhow said. “We have a good amount of meets at home, so that will help us for our conference meet. I try not to have too many meets at home, because I want the kids to learn about their own stroke, and their own shots on difference courses, and having to use yardage, rather than having to rely on I know what to hit on this hole because I have played this so many time, so it is a good learning experience to play on other courses.”
Washington starts their season on April 7th at Marion, and then faces Mt. Pleasant on April 10th. The Demons will return home for a triangular against Columbus and Mid-Prairie on April 15. Washington will also hold three matches at home, on April 24th, 26th and May 6th. Washington hosts the conference meet on May 13th, and will go to sectionals on May 16th.
