A grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources allowed Louisa County to inspect the old jail recently. An asbestos inspection and structural engineering analysis were paid for using the $3,400 DNR Derelict Building grant. According to County Auditor Sandi Elliott, the building, currently rented by the Wapello Police Department, is structurally sound. The inspection did turn up a small amount of asbestos, which will be removed by the county.
