In order to get the nutrition account solvent, the Mid-Prairie School Board will need to work out a plan of action. According to Business Manager Cindy Steege, in order to cover a $73,000 shortage, the district had to borrow from another fund. They have until October to cover it, but Steege says it doesn’t look like that will happen.

She explains the district will need to go before the School Budget Review Committee sometime this fall and ask for forgiveness, provide reasons for the shortfall, and present a plan that will reduce costs and increase revenue. They’ll most likely point to the increase costs associated with the Healthy Kids Act, and providing insurance to staff, as reasons.

She notes the district isn’t expected to increase the cost of school lunches, since it’s already higher than they’d like it to be.
