Today’s record high is 105 degrees and was set in 1936, while we haven’t broken the 100 degree mark yet this summer it is important to be aware of the dangers of Iowa’s summer heat. Washington County Public Health Director, Danielle Pettit-Majewski says hydration is very important. She says to avoid alcoholic beverages, as they will further dehydrate the body. Also, if working outside or exercising in the heat, drink two to four glasses, or 16 to 32 ounces, of water per hour. She notes that this is approximately half of what most people drink in a day. She recommends, if possible, do outdoor activities, such as exercising or mowing the yard, during the morning or in the evening to avoid the heat of the day. Also, be aware of the hot temperatures affecting animals, they should have access to a cool place and water.
