With the temperatures to be in the 50s for highs and the 30s for lows this weekend, cooling already harvested grain is important to avoid spoilage.  Greg Brenneman with the ISU Extension and Outreach says for every ten degree drop in grain temperature, it nearly doubles the allowable storage time.  He adds this should be done on all grain including grain that is already fairly dry as well.

Brenneman says a large fan takes between ten to twenty hours to cool a bin of grain and recommends measuring the temperature of the air coming out of the grain.
