An area outside of Kalona city hall looks brighter thanks to work done by Iowa Mennonite School’s Horticulture Class. Ag Instructor Karen VanDeWalle says that her class took two class periods to plant perennials around the tree outside of City Hall.

According to VanDeWalle, the class of five juniors and seniors were able to combine their class work with the hands on field trip, considering sunlight needs, the longevity and also the anatomy of the plant.

She adds they’ll come back next year to help maintain the area and will also be looking for other places in Kalona that could use “sprucing up.”
