Opening night for a play based on and written in Iowa is this weekend. Starting this Friday, Orphan Train will be presented by Way Off Broadway at the Sondheim Center for Performing Arts in Fairfield.
Orphan Train is based on real events between 1870 and 1920, when over 200,000 orphans from New York were sent to the Midwest by train. 2,000 of which ended up in Iowa. The story follows the journey of six of those orphans.
Randy West with Way Off Broadway says that their Director Patricia Birch is well known in the theatre business, having choreographed the Broadway production and film Grease, Big, and 19 episodes of Saturday Night Live. The play runs through August 12th.
