The Washington Demons put everything together last night and eliminated Fairfield to move on to round two in sub-state play.
The Demons won 7-2, and never were without the lead in the game.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, but errors caused the first run to get across the plate for the Demons, the Trojans had seven on them in the game.
Walker Breard also drove in a run to go up 2-0 in the second.
Jared Henry was on the mound for the Demons, and only had one scary inning in the third, when he walked the bases loaded with two hit batsmen, but got out of the inning with only one run getting on the board.
Washington got the run right back in the fourth and went up 3-1 on the starting pitcher Joseph Hietpas for Fairfield.
The game was a back and fourth after that, with no one getting on the board until the seventh inning when the Trojans went to their new pitcher Corbin Harwood. Washington put two runs on the board after a RBI double by T.J. Rausch, and then a big two run homer from Jake Redlinger.
Fairfield put one more run on the board on a big home run by Corbin Harwood, ending Henry’s night. Henry went 6 1/3, three strikeouts, five walks, five hits and two runs both earned.
Elijah Wood came in in relief and finished things up in style striking out the last batter.
Washington head coach Nathan Miller said he thought this was one of the most complete games the Demons had played.
“We kept our tempo the entire game, the kids played with confidence, we talked about believing in one another at the beginning of the game,” Miller said. “We talked about how each one of those guys have been given some assets, they have been blessed with the ability to play baseball, and to use those the best as they can tonight. I couldn’t have asked for a better outing out of Jared Henry, our defense was outstanding, and our hitting did it’s job.”
The Demons will play in the second round on Monday against Grinnell who was a 3-2 winner over Oskaloosa. Grinnell is 26-5.
