Lawmakers are looking at changing the mental health system in Iowa. The overall goal of the change will be to standardize treatment across all of Iowa, rather than treatment which varies from county to county as it does now. Stephen Trefz with the Community Mental Health Center in Johnson County says services would still be provided at the local level, so patients would still be close to their families. He says the change would mean that the kind of treatment available wouldn’t depend on how much funding there was available in a specific county. This change to the system would cost about $133 million over 5 years. KCII will bring you more on this story as information becomes official.
