Officials shot a mountain lion in Western Iowa last week. Mountain Lions are no longer common in Iowa, although they were before Iowa was heavily settled. Bill Ohde, a wildlife biologist with the Washington DNR office, says they hear reports on Mountain Lions all the time around here, but there hasn’t been a confirmed sighting or any evidence that mountain lions are in our immediate area. Most of the sighting they get are actually other animals like large dogs or even deer. He says its hard to tell if its actually a mountain lion unless it is seen clearly. He thinks its unlikely that we would have a mountain lion in southeast Iowa, since the lions travel from west of the state, but its not impossible. He says to contact your local DNR office if you see a mountain lion, but they need evidence like tracks or a photo so they can evaluate if its an actual mountain lion.
