Today is the deadline to file federal tax returns. The deadline was moved to today because of a holiday in Washington, DC on Friday. The deadline for Iowa state returns is Monday, May 2nd and Iowa Department of Revenue spokeswoman Renee Mulvey says if you can’t make the deadline it’s important to figure out if you will owe anything.
She says if you pay at least 90-percent of what you owe, you have an automatic extension until October. Mulvey says if you can’t pay, you need to contact the department of revenue to set up a payment plan to avoid penalties.
