State funded preschool is one of the programs that might be going to the chopping block. Governor Terry Branstad has listed universal preschool as one of the programs that he wants to cut. Mid Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider says preschool can be very advantageous to students if the preschool is run correctly. Schneider says all you need to do is talk to a kindergarten teacher on the differences between a student who enters kindergarten now with preschool compared to only 5 years ago when very few students came into kindergarten with preschool. He says there is debate whether the advantages of preschool last later on in a child’s life or not. Schneider says Branstad is currently talking about creating a voucher system for kids with financial needs as a compromise.
