The Washington County Board of supervisors received a second presentation from County Engineer David Patterson concerning the state of secondary roads. Patterson asked supervisors yesterday to consider funding two thirds of a $12 million, two year project to repair or reconstruct 125 miles of damaged gravel roads to improve service. Patterson said historically low interest rates and “hungry contractors” are providing Washington County with an opportunity for improvements that will be “cheaper in the future and less expensive to maintain,” noting that problem areas now cause the county to “literally dump money into a hole.”  Supervisor Jim Miksch told Patterson the county can only raise taxes to pay its $8 million share of the project that will attempt to correct nearly $10 million in damage was caused by disasters in 2007 and 2008.  The board unanimously gave Patterson support for further research into the topic.
