
Memorial Day is Monday, and many southeast Iowa communities are hosting observances in honor of the holiday.
The day begins with a flag raising ceremony in Washington at the All Veterans Memorial at 8 a.m., and a ceremony to follow at Central Park at 10 a.m.
Ceremonies in the City of Riverside begin at 10 a.m. Monday with a program at the Riverside Public Cemetery, including the singing of America the Beautiful and The Star-Spangled Banner, the placing of bouquets and a Memorial Day address. After the ceremony, the VFW Post 6414 Honor Guard and VFW Auxiliary Color Bearers will travel to St. Vincent’s Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and St. Stanislaus Cemetery at 11 a.m. for additional ceremonies. A ceremony honoring those lost at sea will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the English River bridge south of the city. Following all services, a luncheon will be held at VFW Post 6414 to honor all veterans. In the event of inclement weather, ceremonies will be held at VFW Post 6414.
Swedesburg will also hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Swedish American Museum.
Ainsworth will honor veterans with a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Ainsworth City Center before shifting to the Oregon Township Cemetery to render honors.
In Winfield, American Legion Post 643 is hosting a 10 a.m. service at the First Presbyterian Church with a salute to fallen heroes to follow at Winfield Scott Township Cemetery.
Richmond AmVets Post 107 will hold a memorial service at 10:15 a.m. at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona before another at the Richmond Catholic Cemetery at 11 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., the Lone Tree American Legion has a service with an All-American hot dog lunch by the Lone Tree Historical Society to follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
